Providing an exciting start to our 6-day trip to the West Kootenay's, we will ski China Ridge near Princeton on Day 1 (dependent upon snow conditions). Note that China Ridge is best for classic skiing! We then head to Osoyoos where we will overnight at the Best Western. The following morning, we travel to Trail skiing enroute at Paulson Recreation Area (the home of the Castlegar Ski Club). On Day 3 we enjoy the 40 km of trails maintained by the Blackjack Ski Club. Afterwards skiers have the option of visiting the historic town of Rossland. Day 4 will find us enjoying the slopes at Nelson Nordic Ski Club. After our ski day we bus to Ainsworth Hot Springs to soak in the hotsprings and then dine in Nelson at its superb restaurants before heading back to our hotel. Day 5 offers 2 options: cross-country skiing at Black Jack or downhill skiing at the world-class Red Mountain Resort. Alternatively, skiers can enjoy a half-day of skiing at Black Jack and then head to Rossland to stroll through the town site, checking out it's charming shops and historic buildings. On our final day of the trip we ski once again at Paulson Recreation Area (Castlegar Nordic Ski Club) prior to "back on the bus" for our 8 hour journey to Vancouver.
The Paulson Cross Country Ski Trails are managed and maintained by the Castlegar Nordic Ski Club and include 53 kilometres of diverse, interconnected trails with opportunities for skiers at all levels, from beginners to intermediate and advanced levels. Approximately 45 kilometres of the trail network are maintained as packed and tracked trails. The Viking Centre and three modern warming huts offer the opportunity for a variety of adventures from a short hour-long ski to a full day outing. W ith an elevation range of 1250 to 1600 metres, this recreation area provides a long ski season with excellent snow conditions and a predominance of sunny days.
The Nelson Nordic Ski Club maintains 25 km of groomed trails for (beginner to expert) classic and skate skiers. The club operates from mid-December to late March, and maintains three warming huts for skiers comfort and enjoyment.
The Black Jack Ski Club, located 3 km from Rossland, is considered one of the premier cross-country ski facilities in western Canada due to excellent grooming, the wide variety of trails, abundant reliable snowfall, and proximity to Rossland. The Black Jack Trailhead is at the same elevation as the base of Red Mountain Resort, at 1183 metres. There are approx 40km of scenic trails groomed for both classic skiing and skate skiing. Black Jack host thousands of day-skier visits per year and many large high-profile races, from NorAm Canada Cups to the Canadian Masters Championships.
